La pioggia di razzi nel sud di Israele lo scorso fine settimana è stata attribuita a Baha Abu al-Ata, un nome familiare a Gaza ,ma ancora praticamente sconosciuto agli israeliani. Ata, una figura di spicco nella Jihad islamica, è diventata una figura dominante nella Striscia ed è recentemente associato all'aumento o al calo delle tensioni con Israele.
Ata è a capo del consiglio militare della Brigata Al-Quds, il braccio militare della Jihad islamica. Comanda le operazioni dell'organizzazione nel nord di Gaza, ma ha anche una grande influenza sul fronte meridionale.
Poiché Hamas ha il potere sovrano a Gaza, non la Jihad islamica, sia fonti israeliane che palestinesi suggeriscono che Ata non si assume alcuna responsabilità nei confronti dei civili palestinesi, dando loro una maggiore libertà di agire.

All'interno della Jihad islamica Ata è subordinato alla leadership politica, guidata dal segretario generale Ziad al-Nakhala, che opera da Beirut e si ritiene che abbia legami con il Corpo della Guardia rivoluzionaria iraniana e con gli Hezbollah.

The shower of rockets on southern Israel last weekend has been credited to Baha Abu al-Ata, a household name to Gazans who is still practically unknown to Israelis. But Ata, a leading figure in Islamic Jihad, has become a dominant figure in the Strip, recently associated with the rise and fall of tensions with Israel.
Ata heads the military council of the Al-Quds Brigade, which is the military arm of the Islamic Jihad. He commands the organization's operations in northern Gaza, but also weilds great influence on the southern front.
Since Hamas is the sovereign power in Gaza, not Islamic Jihad, both Israeli and Palestinian sources suggest Ata bears no responsibility toward Palestinian civilians, giving him greater freedom to act.

Ata has several hundred fighters under his command and an arsenal of dozens of rockets at his disposal that could be fired at Israel, Gazan sources claim. They add that he isn't a lone wolf, but works with a cohort of Islamic Jihad field commanders who have no qualms with contradicting their superiors, whether in Gaza or Beirut. However, Palestinian Authority intelligence sources told Haaretz that Israeli officials overestimate Ata's power to drive a frontal confrontation with Israel.

Another indication of Ata's status in Gaza is his ongoing involvement in talks between Gazan leaders and Egyptian officials, including a meeting that took place two weeks ago.
Like other Jihad and Hamas leaders, Ata doesn't give interviews. He operates in the shadows and his appearances in public are rare. He behaves as though he lives under constant mortal threat. In recent days, Islamic Jihad stated that he is a freedom fighter for the Palestinian cause and issued a warning against harming him.
Though his clout has been mounting lately, threats to his life are nothing new. During Operation Pillar of Defense in 2012, Israel attempted to assassinate him together with other leaders. An Israeli airstrike hit a building he was in, but Ata survived.
During Operation Protective Edge in 2014, his house was bombed, but the Islamic Jihad interpreted the strike as a mere warning, as Ata wasn't home at the time.
Following the rocket fire from Gaza to Israel on Friday, the Israeli army attacked Hamas targets in Gaza to signal Hamas that Islamic Jihad needs to be restrained. However, even though it has the ability, so far it seems that Hamas has not tried to restrain either the organization or Ata himself.
Within the Islamic Jihad, Ata is subordinate to the political leadership, headed by Secretary-General Ziad al-Nakhala, who operates out of Beirut and is believed to have ties with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps and to Hezbollah.
Hamas and Islamic Jihad haven't taken any action to muzzle Ata, likely because they are using him to exert pressure both on Israel and the mediating nations - Egypt and Qatar.
