Il rappresentante Haley Stevens ha sconfitto il rappresentante Andy Levin nelle primarie democratiche del Michigan che erano diventate un referendum  su Israele, su come il Partito Democratico gestisca il dibattito sul conflitto israelo-palestinese e sul potere di spesa dei SuperPAC filo-israeliani volti a influenzare le elezioni.

I due si sono affrontati nell'11° distretto, dove il SuperPAC del progetto United Democracy dell'AIPAC ha speso 4,2 milioni di dollari nella speranza di sconfiggere il candidato ebreo progressista Levin, mentre J Street ha speso 700.000 dollari contro Stevens per il sostegno dell'AIPAC.

Sul recente successo, J Street ha affermato che l'AIPAC "Con la loro spesa schiacciante  spera di inviare un messaggio intimidatorio agli altri  e tu potresti essere il prossimo".

"Questa battaglia politica è stata più grande dei soli candidati al ballottaggio. È stata un'opportunità per sconfiggere un detrattore delle relazioni USA-Israele e per rafforzare il sostegno a Israele, sia all'interno del Partito Democratico che al Congresso in generale", il presidente dell'AIPAC Betsy Berns 

La corsa controversa è diventata de facto una guerra per procura sulle posizioni dei candidati su Israele, per il lamento dei sostenitori ebrei di Levin e dei principali attori del potere politico locale come la rappresentante Debbie Dingell.

Levin ha alluso agli sforzi compiuti per sconfiggerlo, dicendo: "Purtroppo, ero l'obiettivo di una campagna in gran parte finanziata dai repubblicani mirata a sconfiggere il movimento che rappresento, indipendentemente da dove corressi".

Sebbene gli elettori locali non abbiano collocato Israele tra le questioni chiave, è stato catapultato in prima linea nella corsa dopo che le posizioni di Levin sul conflitto israelo-palestinese hanno attirato una significativa opposizione da parte dell'establishment filo-israeliano.

I listened," Stevens said in a victory speech.The two faced off in the 11th district, where AIPAC's United Democracy Project SuperPAC has spent $4.2 million in hopes of defeating progressive Jewish candidate Levin, while J Street has spent $700,000 against Stevens over AIPAC's support.On the recent success, J Street said that AIPAC “With their overwhelming spending, hopes to send an intimidating message to others: Cross our red lines, and you could be next.”"This political battle was bigger than just the candidates on the ballot.
