The plundered harvest - a story for Shavuot:

"After the sowing season of the late 1950s, the Israeli army expelled several Bedouin tribes from around Tel Arad across the border to the [Hashemite] Kingdom of Jordan. This was not an isolated case; Bedouin tribes were also expelled from the Negev Mountains [Jebal Al Naqab] region across the border to Egypt. My participation in what was called the 'abandoned harvest' at Tel Arad had a profound effect on me. My perception of the Zionist practice of ethnic cleansing sharpened.

“And this is what happened: the winter of 1950-1951 was blessed with rains. The barley sown by the Bedouins yielded a magnificent harvest, the like of which happens around here only once a decade. And who if not the Negev kibbutzim, jointly, under the leadership of the army headquarters in the Negev district, stormed the tall ripe crop that flourished there, the fruit of the seeds and labour of the Bedouin Arabs who were expelled from the country after they had sown it... each kibbutz was assigned a plot to harvest. The barley grains were transported in trucks to the grain markets. The proceeds were distributed to each kibbutz according to the kilometrage traversed by each of the combine harvesters that participated in the plundered (‘abandoned’) harvest.

“I was a porter there. With others, I was busily carting, sacks of barley from the fields to the camp and loading them from there onto trucks for marketing. Suddenly, in the middle of loading, the penny dropped, and I began to understand what was actually happening here: a collectivist group imbued with socialist ideas, equipped with the best agricultural machinery purchased with credit provided by the Jewish Agency, reaping the fruits of the labour of poor Arabs who were expelled from their land and country.

“Since then, a thinking process had commenced within me, taking me on a journey me that led me to the left, outside the conceptually material world of Zionism and in search of true socialist human equality."

Dopo la stagione di semina alla fine del 1950, l'esercito israeliano espulse diverse tribù beduine da Tel-Arad attraverso il confine con il Regno di Giordania. Questo non è stato un singolo incidente, anche nell'area del Negev, le tribù beduine sono state deportate oltre il confine con l'Egitto. La mia partecipazione alla tappa del quartiere "Abbandoned Harvest" a Tel-Arad mi ha profondamente colpito. Ho affinato la mia percezione dell'atto sionista di pulizia etnica.

Il fatto che fosse: l'inverno 1950-1951 fu benedetto dalle piogge. L'orzo che i beduini hanno seminato ha prodotto un raccolto magnifico : una volta ogni decennio. Ad ogni kibbutz è stata assegnata una parte del raccolto. I semi d'orzo venivano trasportati con camion ai mercati delle sementi. Tutto è stato diviso per ciascun kibbutz.

Io ero lì a soffrire e insieme ad altri raccoglievamo sacchi d'orzo dai campi e voi li caricate sui camion per il marketing. Improvvisamente ho capito cosa stesse realmente accadendo qui: un gruppo di collettivisti infuso di idee socialiste, dotato del miglior istituto agrario acquistato a credito dall'Agenzia ebraica, sta tagliando i frutti del lavoro dei poveri arabi espulsi dalla loro terra .

Da allora dentro di me la riflessione mi ha portato a sinistra, fuori dal mondo ideologico e pratico del sionismo e alla ricerca della vera uguaglianza umana socialista. "
