Cominiciate a pensare come oppositori del fascismo

Non riesco a togliermi dalla mente Ahmad Mahajna. Quello che mi rode non sono i dottori o la destra che gli hanno distrutto la vita, ma piuttosto il modo in cui è stato trattato dal blocco politico che si ritiene dalla parte "giusta".
L'intera storia di questo medico arabo del Centro Medico Hadassah, dall'inizio della persecuzione nei suoi confronti fino all'inversione di marcia, ha coinvolto esclusivamente esponenti e attivisti di destra. Nessuno del centro o della sinistra, compreso il membro di Meretz che ricopre il ruolo di Ministro della Salute, ha aperto bocca o si è preso la briga di sostenerlo.
Come qualcuno che crede nella divina provvidenza, penso che la storia del Dottor Ahmad Mahajna sia arrivata al momento giusto. Riassume totalmente il risultato delle elezioni. Soprattutto, questo giovane medico ha involontariamente sacrificato la sua reputazione per indicarci la strada da percorrere.
Il blocco liberale ha cercato di vincere con entrambe le mani legate. Ha alcuni fronti meravigliosi su cui è libero di scatenarsi. I diritti delle donne e la comunità LGBTQ, ad esempio, stanno vincendo. Sono sotto attacco, ma i loro alfieri stanno vincendo e alla fine prevarranno. Queste questioni sono facili da spiegare, commercializzare e permettono di inviare messaggi chiari. Insomma, sono ottime cause.
Sfortunatamente, però, queste non sono le questioni principali, e certamente non quelle che faranno vincere le elezioni. La destra ha vinto nonostante il parlamentare Avi Maoz e i suoi sostenitori, ospitando elementi misogini tra le proprie fila, e dissociandosi da loro, non grazie a loro.
La carta vincente con cui il blocco di destra ha conquistato Israele è stata l'odio per gli arabi nel contesto della nostra disputa territoriale. E qui, il blocco avversario si trova in trappola.
La sfida più grande in ogni guerra di idee è sempre stata affinare i messaggi. Nell'era di Twitter e TikTok, le idee complesse non hanno nemmeno l'ombra di una possibilità. La destra dei coloni ha arato a fondo per infondere un messaggio semplice, chiaro e mirato: gli arabi sono disgustosi. Tutti i nostri problemi e tutte le loro soluzioni possono essere trovati sotto "Morte agli Arabi", espresso in termini più educati.
Con grande raffinatezza, la destra dei coloni, anche se sta impiantando la folle dottrina razziale degli avamposti di insediamento nel cuore della collettività, è riuscita a intrappolare i suoi oppositori ideologici all'interno di uno spazio piuttosto ristretto: il patriottismo.
Dopo tutto, tutti gli israeliani ruotano intorno al sionismo, al vittimismo e ai generali in uniformi sporche. Non c'è niente di più sacro del lutto, dei soldati e delle bandiere israeliane. Se è così, ha detto la destra, portiamoli all'estremo: costruiremo avamposti, cambieremo lo status quo sul Monte del Tempio, esproprieremo i palestinesi nelle città miste arabo-ebraiche, creeremo ingiustizie e conflitti, e poi sbatteremo in faccia i risultati alla sinistra.
Perché nel momento in cui arrivano i risultati delle loro azioni ripugnanti, quando inizia un altro ciclo di combattimenti con la Striscia di Gaza, o si verifica un attacco terroristico, si incontreranno con patrioti di sinistra intrappolati nel loro orgoglio israeliano, nella santità delle Forze di Difesa Israeliane e l'onore nazionale. Questi esponenti della sinistra saranno tutti costretti a unirsi e sostenerlo, ancora e ancora. È una trappola geniale.
In un mondo perfetto, li incontreremmo molto prima. Perché molto prima della rabbia collettiva del blocco per l'apparizione come ospite di Itamar Ben-Gvir con la sua pistola alla vigilia delle elezioni di novembre, il progetto di pulizia etnica nel quartiere di Sheikh Jarrah a Gerusalemme era andato avanti a pieno ritmo senza che nessuno lo sfidasse, tanto meno ostacolarlo.
Perché non abbiamo rivolto il nostro sguardo, nemmeno brevemente, al terrore che i coloni stavano scatenando nelle città miste arabo-ebraiche fino a quando i loro rappresentanti politici non hanno invaso gli schermi televisivi del Paese con scene di disordini dall'incendio di Lod e dagli spargimenti di sangue ad Acre. Perché il "blocco della pace" ha abbandonato quasi completamente la battaglia cruciale contro le imprese malvagie del fascismo e scoprì la loro esistenza solo quando arrivarono i risultati: tensioni di sicurezza o un attacco terroristico.
La buona notizia è che è possibile sfuggire a questa trappola. Proprio ora, dal profondo della disperazione, può arrivare questa via di scampo. Ma perché questo miracolo avvenga, è necessario qualcos'altro: rinunciare alla supremazia ebraica.
Per contrastare il fascismo, abbiamo un'idea chiara, semplice, a tutto tondo: l'uguaglianza. E dobbiamo applicarla non solo alle donne e alla comunità LGBTQ, ma in particolare alla questione principale di Israele: i palestinesi.
Non più discorsi altisonanti come: "Sosteniamo una soluzione a Due Stati", ma pieno riconoscimento del fatto che sono persone come noi, delle ingiustizie che hanno subito e dei torti che quotidianamente subiscono in nostro nome, e anche, non ci crederete, essere a favore della loro resistenza. Rinunciare alla supremazia ebraica rimuove tutte le scuse. Un popolo sotto occupazione ha il diritto di resistere. Ovunque nel mondo, senza complessità e senza riserve.
Un elemento importante nella trama del linguaggio fascista di destra, all'interno della quale sono intrappolati i suoi oppositori, è il comportamento statalista. Dopotutto, se lo Stato sei tu e tu sei lo Stato, è difficile rinunciare ai mantra patriottici. Devi salutare la bandiera, baciare l'uniforme e, consapevolmente o meno, vendere la supremazia ebraica in questa parte del mondo.
Ma è ora di svegliarsi. È finita. Questo non è più il nostro Stato. È stato occupato dalle forze fasciste. Ora è il momento di pensare come oppositori del regime. E gli oppositori del nuovo regime non combattono per la "sanità mentale" e il buon governo. Rappresentano senza paura il blocco della piena uguaglianza, che probabilmente minerà le basi della supremazia ebraica.
Nel blocco dell'uguaglianza, non rimaniamo in silenzio quando c'è una guerra a Gaza. Non esitiamo a schierarci con un medico arabo che potrebbe aver soccorso un terrorista e non cerchiamo arabi da complemento che si uniscano a un governo che pianta alberi nel Negev.
Ci hanno chiamato "anarchici"? Non ha senso convincere le persone che nessun attivista di solidarietà ha mai fatto qualcosa a nessun soldato a Hebron; dovremmo semplicemente rispondere che i soldati non dovrebbero essere lì.
Mi hanno definito un "sostenitore del terrorismo"? Ripetete rispettosamente ad alta voce dopo di me: "Sono un fiero sostenitore del terrorismo". Non perché qualcuno di noi sostenga la violenza, il cielo non voglia, ma perché questo termine è stato gravato dalla delegittimazione di tutto il popolo palestinese. Il blocco dell'uguaglianza riconosce loro e il loro diritto di resistere.
Se ritrovano a ripetere continuamente mantra come: "Io sostengo la pace, ma la sicurezza di Israele viene prima di tutto" o: "Palestinesi, non è così che dovrebbe essere la resistenza?" Quindi, per dirla gentilmente, agiscono da fascisti. Escano dal nostro blocco. Non abbiamo modo di vincere con loro nei nostri ranghi, e nemmeno motivo per farlo.
Il nuovo blocco dell'uguaglianza offre un pacchetto completo di giustizia, fratellanza, diritti umani e un'identità israeliana che non si basa sulla superiorità etnica. E vincerà.
Infine, per completa trasparenza: sono stato convocato per essere interrogato per sospetta istigazione al terrorismo a causa di un tweet che faceva una distinzione tra l'attacco a innocenti e l'attacco a soldati. Quindi ho bisogno di amici nel mio momento di difficoltà o, se volete, di amici nella speranza.
I can’t get Ahmad Mahajna out of my mind. What’s eating at me aren’t the doctors or the right-wingers who destroyed his life, but instead by the way he was treated by the “correct” political bloc.
The entire story of this Arab doctor at Hadassah Medical Center – from the start of the persecution against him to the U-turn – exclusively involved representatives and trolls from the right. Nobody from the center or the left, including the Meretz member who serves as health minister, opened their mouth or bothered to support him.
As someone who believes in divine providence, I think the story of Dr. Ahmad Mahajna came at the perfect time. It thoroughly encapsulates the story of the elections. Above all, this young doctor involuntarily sacrificed his reputation to mark the way forward for us.
The liberal bloc has been trying to win with both hands tied behind its back. It has a few wonderful fronts on which it’s free to run wild. Women’s rights and the LGBTQ community, for instance, are winning cards. They are under assault, but their standard-bearers are winning and will ultimately prevail. These issues are easy to explain, market and allow for clear messaging. In short, they’re excellent products.
Unfortunately, however, these aren’t the main issues, and certainly not ones that will win an election. The right won despite MK Avi Maoz and his ilk, by concealing the misogynists in its ranks and defending itself against them, not because of them.
The winning card with which the fascist bloc conquered Israel was hatred of Arabs in the context of our territorial dispute. And here, the opposing bloc finds itself trapped.
The biggest challenge in any war of ideas has always been honing the messages. In the age of Twitter and TikTok, complex ideas don’t even have the beginnings of a chance. The settler right plowed thoroughly in order to implant one simple, clear, on-target message – the Arabs are disgusting. All our troubles and all their solutions can be found under “death to the Arabs,” couched in more polite terms.
With great sophistication, the settler right, even as it is implanting the racial doctrine of the lunatic settlement outposts into the heart of the mainstream, has also managed to trap its ideological opponents within a rather narrow space – patriotism.
After all, all Israelis revolve around Zionism, feelings of victimhood and generals in dirt-stained uniforms. There’s nothing more sacred than bereavement, soldiers and Israeli flags. If so, the right said, let’s take them to their extreme – we’ll build outposts, change the status quo on the Temple Mount, stick fingers in people’s eyes in mixed Arab-Jewish cities, create injustices and conflicts, and then serve the results to the leftists.

Because the moment the results of their loathsome deeds arrive – when another round of fighting with the Gaza Strip begins, or a terror attack occurs – they’ll meet up with leftist patriots trapped in their Israeli pride, the sanctity of the Israel Defense Forces and national honor. These leftists will all be forced to join in and bolster it, over and over. It’s a brilliant trap.
In a properly run world, we would meet up with them long before. Because long before the bloc’s collective anger over Itamar Ben-Gvir’s guest appearance with his pistol on the eve of November’s election, the ethnic cleansing project in Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood had been going on full steam ahead without anyone even challenging, much less fighting it.
Because we didn’t direct our gaze, even briefly, to the madness the settlers were creating in mixed Arab-Jewish cities until their political representatives captured the country’s television screens with scenes of revolution from burning Lod and bleeding Acre. Because the “peace bloc” almost completely abandoned the essential battle against fascism’s evil enterprises and discovered their existence only when the results – security tensions or a terror attack – arrived.
The good news is that it’s possible to escape this trap. Precisely now, from the depths of despair, this escape can emerge. But for this miracle to occur, something else is needed – giving up on Jewish supremacy.
To counter fascism, we have a clear, simple, well-rounded idea – equality. And we must apply it not only to women and the LGBTQ community, but specifically to Israel’s main issue – the Palestinians.
No more lofty talk like “I support a two-state solution,” but full recognition of the fact that they are people like just like us, of the injustices they have suffered and of the wrongs done to them in our name on a daily basis, and also – you won’t believe this – being in favor of their resistance. Giving up on Jewish supremacy removes all the excuses. A people under occupation has the right to resist. Everyplace else in the world, we understand this very well, with no complexity and no reservations.
A major plank in the walls of the right-wing, fascist conversation within which its opponents are trapped is statesmanlike behavior. After all, if the state is you and you are the state, it’s hard to give up on patriotic mantras. You must salute the flag, kiss the uniform and, wittingly or unwittingly, market Jewish supremacy in this part of the world.
But it’s time to wake up. It’s over. This is no longer our state. It has been occupied by fascist forces. Now it’s time to think like opponents of the regime. And the new regime's opponents don’t fight for “sanity” and good government. They fearlessly represent the bloc of full equality, which will likely undermine the foundations of Jewish supremacy.
In the equality bloc, we don’t remain silent when there’s a war in Gaza and we don’t denounce attacks on soldiers of the occupation army. We don’t hesitate to stand with an Arab doctor who might have given cake to a terrorist and we don’t look for pet Arabs to join a government that plants trees in the Negev.
Have they called us “anarchists”? There’s no point in convincing people that not a single solidarity activist ever did anything to any soldier in Hebron; we should simply reply that the soldiers shouldn’t be there.
Have they called you a “supporter of terrorism”? Respectfully repeat aloud after me – “I’m a proud supporter of terrorism.” Not because any of us supports violence, heaven forbid, but because this term has been saddled with the delegitimization of all Palestinian people. The equality bloc recognizes them and their right to resist.
Have you found yourself twisting and turning with mantras like “I support peace, but Israel’s security is above all” or “Tsk, tsk, tsk, Palestinians, this isn’t what resistance ought to look like?” Then to put it gently, you belong with the fascists. Get out of our bloc. We have no way to win with you in it, and also no reason to do so.
The new equality bloc offers a complete package of justice, brotherhood, human rights and an Israeli identity that isn’t based on ethnic superiority. And it’s going to win.
Finally, for the sake of full disclosure: I was summoned for questioning on suspicion of incitement because of a tweet that drew a distinction between attacking innocents and attacking soldiers. So I’m in need of comrades in my time of trouble – or if you will it, comrades in hope.
