Before dawn on Tuesday, the theater of conflict moved to the casbah in Nablus. Soldiers and police came to arrest a wanted man, Ibrahim al-Nabulsi, and weren’t expecting him to come peacefully. According to the Shin Bet security service, al-Nabulsi was involved in a number of shooting incidents near Nablus in recent months. He has also evaded Israeli arrest attempts several times.
On Tuesday, when troops came to arrest him, he barricaded himself in his home and exchanged fire with them. Before being killed, he managed to record a voice message on WhatsApp in which he said goodbye to his mother, announced his intent to die a martyr’s death and urged his comrades not to stop using their guns to resist the Israeli occupation.That’s how legends are made, or at least local heroes. Two other Palestinians were killed with him, one of them 16 years old. Dozens more were wounded, seven of them severely.

Empty promises of measures to improve the West Bank’s economy aren’t enough. And the Palestinian Authority’s leadership, whose control over the territory is weakening, distrusts Israel’s intentions in light of Jerusalem’s forgiving attitude toward Hamas in Gaza.
Surgical assassination
The government and defense establishment are now drawing conclusions from the recent Gaza operation. Amid the flood of information, the army has released, a detailed reconstruction of the assassination that began the operation has drawn attention. That strike killed Tayseer al-Jabari, who commanded Islamic Jihad’s military wing in northern Gaza. Jabari and other senior Islamic Jihad officials were kept under close surveillance for several days, from the moment Israel learned that the organization planned to fire anti-tank missiles over the border in response to the arrest of a senior Jihad official in Jenin, Bassam al-Saadi.After this intelligence was verified, the operation was approved on Friday, August 5. Jabari was in his apartment, located on the sixth floor of a 14-story building in Gaza City. But the assassination’s planners ran into several problems stemming from their desire to avoid harming anyone living on other floors lest this drag Hamas into the conflict.
Achieving that goal required an unusually complex operation, in which fighter planes launched eight small glide bombs into the apartment. As a result, none of Jabari’s relatives in another apartment on the same floor were hurt, nor were the people in the apartment above him. The bombing was planned so that the bombs would go through the apartment above him without exploding or killing anyone there.
This was a model of precise planning and scrupulous execution, and indeed, no civilians outside Jabari’s apartment were hurt. It exemplifies the effort that was invested to avoid exceeding the operation’s bounds and end it quickly.
Nevertheless, it remains to be seen what effect the assassination of several senior Jihad officials in Gaza, of which the IDF is so proud, will actually have. More than once in the past, the holes have been filled faster than intelligence agencies predicted.
IDF revels in killing jihadis
Unlike during previous operations in Gaza, this time, Israel constantly and very noticeably stressed its desire to minimize Palestinian civilian casualties. According to IDF figures, more civilians in Gaza were killed by misfired Islamic Jihad rockets than by Israeli air strikes. The need for extra care was stressed in every media briefing by the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit.
Prime Minister Yair Lapid also deviated from his predecessor’s practices on this issue. On Monday, he issued a press statement expressing regret for the deaths of Palestinian children during the operation and said that Israel tries to avoid this.
But Israel’s official message, or at least the way it’s reflected in the media, is sometimes at odds with itself. In the past, the IDF has released footage of air strikes on Hamas and Islamic Jihad targets in Gaza, but that is aerial photography in which you can’t see much except the bombing and the cloud of smoke it produces.
This time, footage was released of a ground attack on an Islamic Jihad lookout tower near the border that clearly showed the death of one of the group’s operatives. It’s hard to avoid the suspicion that someone wanted to graphically illustrate IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi’s promise of making the IDF into a more lethal army.
The army also went two steps forward – or more accurately, downward – in media interviews. Tank officers excitedly described how they “saw the whites of the terrorists’ eyes” – that is, shelled lookout towers without warning and killed Islamic Jihad operatives there.
One interesting detail was hidden in those articles. In the past, the IDF used a signal understood by the armed Palestinians. The soldiers would signal them, and the Palestinians would quickly leave the lookout towers. But not this time.
One female IDF officer who was warmly embraced by the media went even further. This was a clear case in which the IDF released too much information, from its own standpoint.
She too described the killing of an Islamic Jihad operative (using a machine gun stationed on a lookout tower but operated remotely by soldiers stationed in an operations room somewhere else). Her quote almost seems to be inviting an outside investigation: “The Jihad operative came down from the position unarmed, and I opened fire. When he fell, I fired again.”
This article even mentioned the procedure of “confirming the kill,” which the army for years refused to admit using. In the media’s desire to laud and exalt the army during the fighting, several lines were crossed here. And Israel scored a magnificent own goal.
