Qualche settimana fa ho preso parte ad un’importante conferenza in Germania sul sequestro della memoria dell’Olocausto e la nuova destra. E’ stata una delle più intense, particolari e impegnate conferenze a cui abbia mai partecipato.

L’establishment ebraico locale ha immediatamente reagito con una prevedibile risposta pavloviana: “Antisemiti!”, “Sostenitori del BDS!”. Ci sono state anche sgradevoli e scorrette insinuazioni riguardo ad uno dei più importanti storici della nostra generazione (ovviamente non ebreo). Io c’ero: mentono e distorcono la realtà. Ecco perché adesso mi è chiaro che è tempo di far scoppiare il bubbone di cui sono responsabili.

Negli anni scorsi si sono svolti in Germania parecchi eventi che hanno messo in questione il discorso ebraico-israeliano-tedesco. Uno scrittore ebreo, che sta fuori dal coro dei conservatori, è stato messo a tacere perché sua madre non è ebrea. Contemporaneamente il direttore del museo ebraico di Berlino è stato costretto a dimettersi a causa di un tweet sulla libertà di espressione.

Ora sono nel mezzo di una feroce campagna di delegittimazione nei confronti di alcune tra le più importanti istituzioni di ricerca e culturali sia in Germania che nel mondo: l’Einstein Forum e il Centro Internazionale di Berlino per lo studio dell’antisemitismo. Nella miglior tradizione della falsa propaganda, hanno rinominato quest’ultimo “l’istituzione per l’antisemitismo”.

Stanno cercando di intimidire e intimorire centri importantissimi e validi ricercatori la cui unica colpa è lottare per una ricerca in profondità e universale, senza che vengano imposte a priori delle mistificazioni demagogiche. Chiunque osi esprimere un’opinione o una posizione diversa dalla loro rischia di essere giustiziato pubblicamente.

La Germania ha un governo eletto, ma quando si tratta di sensibilità su questioni legate alla storia ebraica-tedesca o all’attuale problema dell’antisemitismo tutto viene controllato dal Consiglio Centrale degli Ebrei in Germania. Questo ente dovrebbe rappresentare la totalità degli ebrei della Germania, ma di fatto ne rappresenta solo una piccola parte.

Sotto molti aspetti ciò è logico e giustificabile. Ma pochi colgono la catena di connessioni: l’estrema destra guida la politica dello Stato di Israele; Israele modella le posizioni del Consiglio Centrale e a sua volta questo ente detta la linea delle discussioni politiche più delicate in Germania. Ciò significa che la destra israeliana conservatrice e razzista ha il controllo di una gamma di sentimenti dei tedeschi relativi al loro passato riguardante gli ebrei, l’antisemitismo e Israele.

Come è successo? Israele ha trasformato l’antisemitismo in una potente arma diplomatica. Il suo governo conservatore ha ampliato molto questo concetto. Ogni critica è antisemita; ogni oppositore è un nemico; ogni nemico è Hitler; ogni anno è il 1938.

Questa è la struttura portante della sensibilità politica e dell’arte di governo di Israele e la Germania vi gioca un ruolo chiave: funge da certificazione kosher [di purezza dal punto di vista della religione ebraica, ndt.] per le ingiustizie perpetrate dagli ebrei israeliani. Lo Stato tedesco è terrorizzato da ogni confronto o chiarificazione con Israele sulla natura dell’antisemitismo contemporaneo e sulla questione di che cosa sia una critica corretta delle illegittime politiche israeliane.

Tramite questa elusione la Germania è diventata il maggior garante e complice della realtà in cui i palestinesi sono privi di diritti e di status nella loro stessa patria. Non ci sarà mai pace in Medio Oriente, né esisterà un Israele sano e duraturo, finché la Germania sarà prigioniera delle complessità del suo passato.

L’Olocausto e lo Stato di Israele devono rimanere componenti cruciali dell’identità politica ed etica della Germania – ma non si tratta di questo. In tutti gli ambiti relativi ad Israele e al popolo ebreo, in Germania attualmente non esiste una reale libertà di espressione. Viene attivata automaticamente una stretta e severa censura, anche se si può capire. Ma un meccanismo di cinico sfruttamento politico ha preso il controllo, trasformando l’Olocausto e la sua memoria in strumento per respingere ogni critica ad Israele.

Non esiste nessun altro Paese nell’Occidente democratico che nega i diritti naturali di milioni di persone a votare ed essere eletti, a vivere nel proprio Paese in virtù del diritto all’autodeterminazione, come fa Israele al popolo palestinese. Israele è in grado di fare questo perché gli Stati Uniti considerano giusta la loro visione distorta e la Germania sostiene ogni capriccio israeliano automaticamente e cecamente.

C’è ancora del vero antisemitismo nel mondo e non si deve mostrare alcuna comprensione o legittimazione verso di esso. In piccola parte si tratta del vecchio e tradizionale antisemitismo; in parte è una variante diffusa da gruppi anti-israeliani che usano il crimine dell’occupazione per attaccare tutti gli ebrei dovunque siano e negano la loro esistenza come individui e come comunità.

C’è anche un livello ancor più subdolo e pericoloso di antisemitismo: quello che si ammanta di un falso sostegno ad Israele per nascondere la propria xenofobia e odio per gli immigrati. E’ l’antisemitismo dei fascisti e dei neo-nazisti che “amano” Israele. E sorprendentemente parecchi ebrei perbene e tedeschi dell’establishment li sostengono perché, almeno per il momento, appaiono come filo-ebrei o filoisraeliani. In termini più chiari: ci sono ebrei e tedeschi che sostengono l’antisemitismo sottoforma di amore per Israele.

C’è un altro modo per combattere l’antisemitismo globale e l’odio per gli ebrei in Germania. E’ accettabile criticare Israele, esattamente come è accettabile difenderlo. Si può contestare le sue politiche, così come si può appoggiarle. Ed è persino possibile che esista un antisionismo ideologico e intellettuale che non è antisemitismo.

Inoltre la lotta contro il vero antisemitismo non è un problema solo per gli ebrei. Si deve costituire un’alleanza contro ogni forma di odio, sia locale che globale. Quando qualcuno odia un turco, odia anche me. Quando offende i musulmani, offende me. E quando perseguita gli immigrati, le donne e i membri della comunità LGBTQ+, anche io vengo perseguitato. Perché questo è il volto del vero ebraismo, dalla Bibbia a Martin Buber: una civiltà che non ignora mai i propri obblighi universali verso tutte le persone.

L’odio per gli ebrei non deve costituire un’eccezione nell’elenco di odi dei nostri tempi. Solo in questo modo, attraverso la solidarietà con tutte le vittime, possiamo ottenere la vittoria sulla coalizione degli odiatori e dei populisti. In questa lotta globale tedeschi ed ebrei hanno un ruolo strategico di enorme importanza. La Germania è la chiave dell’intero Occidente. È una vergogna che i suoi dirigenti siano un’irresponsabile banda di ebrei egocentrici e tedeschi incapaci di distinguere la luce dal buio.

Come presidente a mio tempo della Knesset [il parlamento israeliano, ndt.] e come ex presidente dell’Organizzazione Mondiale Sionista, che è stata coinvolta per molti anni in questa questione, chiedo al governo tedesco e a Josef Schuster, presidente del Consiglio Centrale degli ebrei in Germania: scegliete una data e un luogo e discutiamo del modo in cui l’Olocausto deve essere ricordato nel XXI secolo; del fatto che è vietato sfruttarlo per fini politici impropri; di come rappresentare gli ebrei e l’ebraismo. E soprattutto di come costruire un mondo in cui Israele sia un esempio per risolvere i conflitti e non un certificato kosher per tutti i meschini interessi nel mondo populista di oggi.

Germany Provides a Kosher Stamp for the Israeli Occupation

A few weeks ago, I took part in an important conference in Germany on the hijacking of Holocaust remembrance and the New Right. It was one of the deepest, most diverse and sensitive conferences I have ever attended.

The Jewish establishment there reacted immediately with the expected Pavlovian response: “Antisemites!” “BDS supporters!” There were also ugly and vicious insinuations about one of the most important historians of our generation (a non-Jew, of course). I was there – they are lying and distorting. That’s why it is now clear to me that the time has come to lance the boil they are responsible for.In recent years, a number of events have been held in Germany that have challenged the Jewish-Israeli-German discourse. A Jewish writer, who does not sing with the conservative choir, was silenced because his mother is not Jewish. The director of the Jewish Museum Berlin, meanwhile, was forced to resign because of a tweet about freedom of speech.

Now they are in the midst of an ugly delegitimization campaign aimed at a few of the most important research and cultural institutions in both Germany and the world: the Einstein Forum and the Berlin International Center for the Study of Antisemitism. In the best tradition of deceitful propaganda, they have labeled the latter “the institution for antisemitism.”

They are trying to intimidate and bully essential centers and excellent researchers, whose only sin is to strive for in-depth, universal research without demagogic deceptions being imposed in advance. Anyone daring to express a opinion or a position different from theirs risks a public beheading.

Germany has an elected government, but when it comes to emotions on matters related to Jewish-German history or the current matter of antisemitism, everything is controlled by the Central Council of Jews in Germany. This body is supposed to represent all of Germany’s Jews, but in practice represents only a small part of them.

In many ways, this is logical and justifiable. But few understand the chain of connections: the far right runs the policies of the State of Israel; Israel shapes the positions of the Central Council – and this body in turn dictates the most sensitive political discussions in Germany. This means that the conservative and racist Israeli right controls Germany’s range of emotions regarding its past concerning Jews, antisemitism and Israel.

How did this happen? Israel has turned antisemitism into a powerful diplomatic weapon. Its conservative government has greatly expanded the concept. Any criticism is antisemitic; every opponent is an enemy; every enemy is Hitler; every year is 1938.

This is the infrastructure of Israeli political awareness and statesmanship, and Germany plays a key role in it: to serve as a kosher certificate for the injustices carried out by Israeli Jews. The German state is terrified of any confrontation or clarification with Israel over the nature of contemporary antisemitism, and the question of what is appropriate criticism of Israel’s illegitimate policies.

Through this avoidance, Germany has become the greatest preserver and enabler of the reality in which Palestinians lack rights and status in their own homeland. There will never be peace in the Middle East, and there will never be a healthy and sustainable Israel, as long as Germany is captive to the complications of its past.

The Holocaust and the State of Israel must remain critical components of Germany’s political and ethical identity – but this is not the case. In all areas concerning Israel and the Jewish people, no real freedom of expression currently exists in Germany. Strict and severe censorship is automatically activated there, even if understandably. But a mechanism of cynical and political exploitation has assumed control, turning the Holocaust and its memory into a means for rejecting any criticism of Israel.

No other country exists in the democratic West that denies the natural rights of millions to vote and be elected, to live in their own country by virtue of the right to self-determination, as Israel does to the Palestinian people. Israel is capable of doing this because the warped United States views itself as straight , and Germany supports every Israeli whim automatically and blindly.

There is still real antisemitism in the world, and it is forbidden to show any understanding or legitimacy toward it. A small part of it is the old and traditional antisemitism; part is a mutation spread by anti-Israel groups who use the crime of the occupation to attack all Jews wherever they are and deny their being as individuals and a community.

There is also an even more devious and dangerous level of antisemitism: one that uses a fake cloak of support for Israel to hide its xenophobia and hatred of immigrants. This is the antisemitism of fascists and neo-Nazis who “love” Israel. And, amazingly, quite a few decent Jews and establishment Germans support them because they are pro-Jewish or pro-Israel, supposedly and for now at least. Put less subtly: There are Jews and Germans who support antisemitism under the guise of loving Israel.

There is another way to fight global antisemitism and hatred of Jews in Germany. It is acceptable to criticize Israel, just as it is acceptable to defend it. It is permissible to oppose its policies, just as it is permissible to support them. And it is even possible to have an ideological and intellectual reality of anti-Zionism that is not antisemitism.

Furthermore, the fight against real antisemitism is not a problem for the Jews alone. An alliance must be formed against all kinds of hate, both local and global. When someone hates a Turk, they hate me as well. When they harm Muslims, they harm me. And when they persecute immigrants, women and members of the LGBTQ+ community, I too am persecuted. Because that is the face of true Judaism, from the Bible to Martin Buber – a civilization that never ignores its universal obligations to all people.

The hatred of Jews must not be an exception in our age’s litany of hate. Only this way, by cooperative solidarity with any victim, can we achieve victory over the coalition of haters and populists. In such a global struggle, Germans and Jews have a strategic role of major importance. Germany is the key to the entire West. It is a shame that its leaders are an irresponsible bunch of self-serving Jews, and Germans who are incapable of distinguishing light from darkness.

In my time as Knesset speaker and as the former chairman of the World Zionist Organization, who has been involved in this field for many years, I appeal to the German government and to Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany: Pick a time and a place, and we’ll discuss the way the Holocaust should be remembered in the 21st century. How it is forbidden to exploit it for inappropriate political purposes. How to represent Jews and Judaism. And, above all, how to create a world in which Israel is a role model for resolving disputes and not a kosher certificate for any illiberal interests in today’s populist world.
