Ahmad Melhem : Palestinesi divisi sulla cancellazione del concerto del cantante gay
Il 17 giugno, un giovane palestinese nella città di Ramallah, nella Cisgiordania centrale, ha impedito al cantante Bashar Murad di esibirsi per il suo sostegno all'omosessualità in Palestina.
Sull sua pagina Facebook, Murad, che è gay , ha annunciato la cancellazione dello spettacolo dal vivo presso lo spazio culturale al-Mustawda3 a Ramallah, senza spiegarne le ragioni.
Il video girato all'interno dello spazio culturale , diventato virale sui social media ,ha mostrato un gruppo di giovani che chiedevano ai dipendenti di al-Mustawda3 di annullare lo spettacolo perché gli artisti erano gay.
Un palestinese di nome Yaman Jarrar ha detto: “Bashar Murad è un pervertito e non terrà uno spettacolo qui. Non ci rappresenta e non rappresenta nessun palestinese libero. Inoltre la nostra religione non lo permette”.
Ha aggiunto: “Siamo venuti da te con grande rispetto per comunicarti il messaggio : non permetteremo a questi pervertiti di passare. Vi chiediamo di non mettere alla prova la nostra pazienza quando si tratta di cose che Dio ha proibito, non permetteremo a nessuno di osare violare la nostra onorevole religione, questa è una linea rossa ".
La data dello spettacolo ha coinciso con l' uccisione di tre giovani palestinesi da parte delle forze israeliane nel campo di Jenin. Jarrar ha sottolineato : "Mentre i giovani di Jenin stanno sacrificando le loro vite per l'amata patria, un gruppo sospetto ha cercato di organizzare una festa gay a Ramallah".
Jarrar e il gruppo di uomini con lui sono stati ampiamente elogiati sui social media.
Tutte le parti coinvolte – i giovani che hanno protestato contro il concerto, Murad, la direzione di al-Mustawda3 e persino la polizia palestinese – si sono rifiutate di commentare ad Al-Monitor.
In un post del 17 giugno sulla sua pagina Facebook , Jarrar, figlio dell'importante predicatore di Hamas Bassam Jarrar, ha affermato che il suo gruppo ha ricevuto informazioni sul fatto che a Ramallah si sarebbe tenuta una festa gay annuale. Dopo essere arrivati al sito, "siamo rimasti sorpresi da un gruppo gay che prendeva in giro la nostra vera religione e lanciava spazzatura e pietre mentre eseguivamo la preghiera del Maghrib di fronte al luogo, dove si sarebbe tenuto l'evento".
Murad è un cantante e cantautore di Gerusalemme. In un'intervista del 2019 con la BBC, ha affermato di cercare di fare luce su questioni come l'uguaglianza di genere e i diritti LGBT e di trasmettere l'idea che la società palestinese è ricca di storie e talenti e molto più profonda dell'occupazione israeliana . "Capisco che è un lavoro in corso per aprire la mente delle persone a nuove idee".
Sui social media la maggior parte dei palestinesi ha accolto con favore la cancellazione dello spettacolo, mentre altri hanno criticato l'interferenza dei giovani.
Parlando con Al-Monitor, l'autore e analista politico palestinese Nihad Abu Ghosh ha ribadito la sua condanna per la cancellazione dello spettacolo, che aveva pubblicato su Facebook , affermando : "Coloro che si auto-nomizzano agenti di Allah sulla terra e guardiani dei Suoi confini sono praticamente prendendo in mano la legge”.
Successivamente, ha detto, "coloro che affermano di essere i rappresentanti dei giovani a Ramallah possono anche dare la caccia a una ragazza senza velo o a una studentessa che cammina per strada con la sua collega o in un bar dove uomini e donne vengono accolti insieme. Non ci vorrà molto prima che inizino i loro attacchi con l'acido alle ragazze che frequentano università e scuole", ha aggiunto.Abu Ghosh ha proseguito: “La cosa strana è il silenzio sospetto dell'Autorità Palestinese sulla violazione della sua area di competenza e la confisca del suo ruolo. È stato ripetutamente taciuto su coloro che prendono in mano la legge. […] Il peggio è che c'è chi pensa che eventi come il concerto di al-Mustawda , siano più pericolosi per la società palestinese dell'occupazione”.
Nel 2019, l'AP ha bandito Al-Qaws for Sexual and Gender Diversity in Palestine Society, un'organizzazione civile palestinese che lavora per proteggere i diritti della comunità LGBTQ, e le ha impedito di svolgere qualsiasi attività in Cisgiordania.
Commentando l'evento cancellato a Ramallah, Al-Qaws ha scritto in un post sulla sua pagina Facebook il 21 giugno, sull'"ondata di violenza, incitamento, distorsione e minaccia sociale in nome della religione, dei costumi e delle tradizioni".
L'organizzazione ha aggiunto che la cancellazione è "particolarmente nuova in termini di metodo e strumenti che riguardano individui specifici che lavorano nei campi politici e culturali palestinesi . La cancellazione prende di mira le istituzioni che difendono i gay".
On June 17, Palestinian youth in the city of Ramallah, in the central West Bank, prevented singer Bashar Murad from performing over what they called his support of homosexuality in Palestine.
In a story on his Facebook page, Murad, who is gay, announced the cancellation of the live show at al-Mustawda3 cultural space in Ramallah, without explaining the reasons.
But a video taken inside the cultural space that went viral on social media showed a group of young men asking employees at al-Mustawda3 to cancel the show because the performers were gay.
A Palestinian named Yaman Jarrar said, “Bashar Murad is a pervert, and shall not hold a show here. He does not represent us and does not represent any free Palestinian person. Plus our religion does not allow this.”
He added, “We came to you very respectfully to communicate the message that we will not allow these perverts to pass. We ask you not to test our patience when it comes to things God prohibited, and we will not allow anyone to dare to violate our honorable religion, this is a red line,”
The date of the show coincided with the killing of three Palestinian youths by Israeli forces in the Jenin camp. Jarrar said, “While the young men of Jenin are sacrificing their lives for the beloved homeland, a suspicious group tried to hold a gay party in Ramallah.”
Jarrar and the group of men with him were widely praised on social media.
All parties involved — the young men who protested the concert, Murad, al-Mustawda3’s management, and even the Palestinian police — all refused to comment to Al-Monitor.
In a June 17 post on his Facebook page, Jarrar, who is the son of prominent Hamas preacher Bassam Jarrar, said that his group received information that an annual gay party was to be held in Ramallah. After they arrived at the site, "we were surprised by gay group mocking our true religion and throwing rubbish and stones while we were performing the Maghrib prayer in front of the venue, where the event was set to be held.”
Murad is a singer and songwriter from Jerusalem. In a 2019 interview with the BBC, he said that he tries to shed light on issues such as gender equality and LGBT rights, and to convey the idea that Palestinian society is diverse, rich in stories and talents, and much deeper than the Israeli occupation. “I understand it's a work in progress to open up people's minds to new ideas,” he said.
On social media, the majority of Palestinians welcomed the show’s cancellation, while others criticized the young people’s interference.
Speaking to Al-Monitor, Palestinian author and political analyst Nihad Abu Ghosh reiterated his condemnation of the cancelation of the show, which he had published on Facebook, saying, “Those who appoint themselves as Allah’s agent on earth and the guardians of His boundaries are practically taking the law into their own hands.”
Next, he said, "those who claimed to be representatives of the youth in Ramallah can even go after an unveiled girl or a student walking in the street with her colleague or a café where men and women are welcomed together. It won’t take long before they perhaps start their acid attacks on girls who go to universities and schools,” he added.
Abu Ghosh continued, “The strange thing is the PA’s suspicious silence about the violation of its area of competence and confiscation of its role. It repeatedly remained silent on those who take the law in their own hands. … The worst is that there are those who think that events like the concert at al-Mustawda3 are more dangerous on Palestinian society than the occupation.”
In 2019, the PA banned Al-Qaws for Sexual and Gender Diversity in Palestinian Society, a Palestinian civil organization that works to protect the rights of the LGBTQ community, and prevented it from holding any activities in the West Bank.
Commenting on the canceled event in Ramallah, Al-Qaws wrote in a post on its Facebook page on June 21, about the “wave of violence, incitement, distortion and societal threat in the name of religion, customs and traditions.”
The organization added that the cancellation is "particularly new in terms of its method and tools that affect specific individuals working in the Palestinian political and cultural fields, and that it targets institutions simply for hosting what is being seen as gay.”
