L'Egitto chiuderà a tempo indeterminato il suo valico di frontiera di Rafah con la Striscia di Gaza, hanno riferito un funzionario di Hamas e fonti di sicurezza egiziane alle agenzie di stampa, in seguito ai violenti scontri del fine settimana lungo il confine di Gaza con Israele.
"Siamo stati informati dalle autorità egiziane che il valico di Rafah sarà chiuso domani, lunedì, in entrambe le direzioni", ha dichiarato domenica in una nota Iyad al-Bozom, portavoce del ministero degli Interni di Hamas.
Bozon non ha detto cosa abbia spinto la chiusura di Rafah, ma fonti della sicurezza egiziana hanno detto a Reuters che la recente violenza transfrontaliera ha portato alla chiusura. Sabato, i jet israeliani hanno bombardato obiettivi di Hamas a Gaza in risposta a violenti scontri lungo la recinzione che hanno ferito gravemente un soldato israeliano. Decine di palestinesi, tra questi un ragazzo di 13 anni, sono stati feriti dal fuoco israeliano.
Centinaia di palestinesi si erano radunati per protestare contro il blocco israeliano e le restrizioni per ricostruzione dopo il conflitto di 11 giorni, che ha ucciso più di 250 palestinesi e 13 residenti in Israele. Il Cairo, che a maggio ha mediato il cessate il fuoco che ha posto fine ai combattimenti Hamas-Israele, ha cercato di negoziare una tregua più permanente tra le due parti.

La sua chiusura segue l' annuncio del Qatar che Israele consentirà il trasferimento di pagamenti in contanti a circa 100.000 famiglie palestinesi bisognose nel territorio assediato. Hamas aveva minacciato ulteriori violenze se gli aiuti del Qatar fossero rimasti congelati, ma venerdì ha accolto con favore l'annuncio .
Nonostante il fragile cessate il fuoco, i militanti palestinesi a Gaza hanno continuato a lanciare palloni incendiari oltre il confine incendiando terreni agricoli e riserve naturali israeliane. Israele ha risposto effettuando attacchi aerei su quelli che si dice siano i siti di produzione e stoccaggio di armi di Hamas a Gaza.
In apparente rappresaglia per un raid mortale israeliano nella città di Jenin in Cisgiordania, il 16 agosto i militanti di Gaza hanno lanciato due razzi, uno dei quali è stato intercettato dal sistema di difesa missilistico israeliano Iron Dome. L'altro è caduto a Gaza.
Egypt will indefinitely close its Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip, a Hamas official and Egyptian security sources told news outlets, following the weekend’s violent clashes along Gaza’s border with Israel.
“We were informed by the Egyptian authorities that the Rafah crossing will be closed tomorrow, Monday, in both directions,” Iyad al-Bozom, spokesman for the Hamas-run Interior Ministry, said in a statement Sunday.
Bozon did not say what prompted Rafah’s shuttering, but Egyptian security sources told Reuters that the recent cross-border violence led to the closure. On Saturday, Israeli jets bombed Hamas targets in Gaza in response to violent clashes along the perimeter fence that severely wounded an Israeli soldier. Dozens of Palestinians, including a 13-year-old boy, were injured by the Israeli fire.
Hundreds of Palestinians had gathered to protest Israel’s blockade and restrictions on reconstruction following the 11-day conflict, which killed more than 250 Palestinians and 13 residents of Israel. Cairo, which in May brokered the cease-fire that ended the Hamas-Israel fighting, has been trying to negotiate a more permanent truce between the two sides.
Since Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip in 2007, the Palestinian enclave has been under a tight blockade imposed by Egypt and Israel that is aimed at pressuring the Islamic militant group. But human rights groups say the air, land and sea restrictions have devastated Gaza’s economy and amount to collective punishment of its 2 million residents.
The Egyptian-run Rafah crossing is the sole passageway from Gaza that is not controlled by Israel. Its closure follows an announcement from Qatar that Israel will allow the transfer of cash payments to some some 100,000 needy Palestinian families in the besieged territory. Hamas had threatened further violence if the Qatari aid stayed frozen, but on Friday welcomed the announcement.
Despite the fragile cease-fire, Palestinian militants in Gaza have continued to launch incendiary balloons across the border that have set fire to swathes of Israeli farmland and nature reserves. Israel has responded by carrying out airstrikes on what it says are Hamas’ weapons manufacturing and storage sites in Gaza.
In apparent retaliation for a deadly Israeli raid in the West Bank city of Jenin, on Aug. 16 Gaza militants fired two rockets, one of which was intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system. The other landed in Gaza.
