It’s a bold statement that I’ve used in my post title. And I did so deliberately, because Netanyahu has done this once before. He was a key figure in inciting the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, then prime minister of Israel, in 1995. Not only did Bibi appear at rallies in which protesters held aloft coffins which displayed Rabin’s name and nooses (meant for his as well), he gave a Nuremburg-style speech in Zion Square before 10,000 settlers baying for blood. He ranted as protesters waved aloft signs featuring Rabin an SS uniform. Only three weeks later, Yigal Amir, nourished on this diet of hate, pumped bullets into Rabin and murdered him. It is literally Israel’s Crime of the Century (if you discount Nakba). One that has defined it for the worse for a generation.

Now, he’s at it again. Yesterday Netanyahu, who sees his leadership slipping from his grasp, lashed out at his rivals as they drew ever nearer to forming a center-right government which would exclude him from the premiership for the first time in 12 years. He ranted and screeched like a petulant teenager:
“We just came out of the war, a military campaign. And it was clear during the struggle that Hamas could not be fought by a left-wing government. It is impossible to fight the rioters inside the country with a left-wing government. It is impossible to protect IDF soldiers from being prosecuted as war criminals at The Hague with a left-wing government. Calls now for the establishment of a Palestinian state and the division of Jerusalem with a left-wing government cannot be avoided.”
Is this what’s important [to Bennett]? To create a leftist government under false pretenses? To endanger the land of Israel, the State of Israel, the army? For shame! That government is a danger to the security of Israel and a danger to the future of the state,
The irony of this statement is that all of these leaders who supposedly pose a clear and present danger to the State’s existence are ones with whom he has served in previous governments. If they are traitors or worse then why did he serve with them in the first place?
Bibi is more clever than a mafia don. The latter actually has to give the order to hit a rival. Bibi doesn’t even have to do that. All he does is call them “traitorous leftists.” It’s a code the next Yigal Amir will understand implicitly.
Sara Netanyahu’s brother poured oil on the fire in this interview:
Hagai Ben-Artzi, repeatedly asserted that the actions of the political players combining to try to bring down Netanyahu meet the biblical definition of treason. “They are committing treason against the Jewish people, Zionism, and the State of Israel.”
All it takes is a match. One little match lit with a slight amount of friction. And everything goes up in flames. We just saw riots in which Judeo-fascist vigilantes swarmed the streets thirsting for Palestinian blood. In which Palestinians took to the streets and torched a synagogue. Do we want to add the murder of Naftali Bennett or Ayelet Shaked to the mix? The difference between 1995 and today is that Israelis were confused then about how the murder could happen. If it happens again they will not be confused. They will know where to place blame.
If I were Avichai Mandelblit I would accelerate the pace of Bibi’s corruption trial. Get a court decision as quickly as possible. If guilty, get him in prison. Otherwise, he is a danger to the nation. He could, just for spite and the sake of his own vanity, bring down the walls of the Philistine temple and kill everyone along with him.
Though Bennett has publicly announced he will form a government, there are still issues to be ironed out and portfolios to be decided. But Israel is closer than ever before to ousting this poisonous toad of a politician who spits venom with every word he speaks.
