Un Trump sfrenato potrebbe ancora scatenare la violenza contro l'Iran, ma i media statunitensi minimizzano il pericolo

L' unica frase agghiacciante è proprio lì nell'ottavo paragrafo dell'articolo odierno del New York Times sul licenziamento del suo segretario alla Difesa, Mark Esper:
. . . I funzionari del Dipartimento della Difesa hanno espresso privatamente la preoccupazione che il presidente possa avviare operazioni, palesi o segrete, contro l'Iran o altri avversari nei suoi ultimi giorni in carica.
Quell'espressione - "iniziare operazioni" - è un perfetto esempio di vaghezza orwelliana; ciò che il documento in realtà significa è questo: "il comandante in capo Trump potrebbe ordinare alle truppe americane di sparare contro l'Iran e uccidere iraniani".
Subito dopo quell'unica frase, il Times abbandona completamente l'argomento e discute sui cambi che seguiranno il licenziamento di Esper da parte di Trump. I lettori del Times , specialmente in America, non hanno il diritto di avere più notizie su come il loro presidente potrebbe agire ?
Ci si deve rivolgere ad Axios per saperne di più. Barak Ravid, israeliano, riferisce che l'inviato speciale di Trump per l'Iran, Elliott Abrams, è in Medio Oriente, "per imporre una lunga serie di nuove sanzioni su Teheran nelle 10 settimane rimaste. Fonti israeliane hanno detto a Ravid che questa "marea" di sanzioni
aumenterà la pressione sugli iraniani e renderà più difficile per l'amministrazione Biden rilanciare l'accordo nucleare del 2015. . .
Anche il giornalista del New York Times David Halbfinger è in Israele, ma in qualche modo ha perso la visita di Elliott Abrams. Oggi ha scritto un articolo ,apparso dopo il dispaccio di Axios , ma a quanto pare non è riuscito a chiedere alle sue fonti della crescente pressione sull'Iran. Lui e il Times in generale, continuano a celare un elemento centrale della storia: il primo ministro israeliano Benjamin Netanyahu ha cercato di spingere gli Stati Uniti in un conflitto con l'Iran per più di un decennio.
Halbfinger ha anche omesso di riportare una dichiarazione inquietante di Tzachi Hanegbi, un ministro del governo che appartiene al partito Likud di Netanyahu. Egli ha affermato che se Biden rilancia l'accordo nucleare iraniano ,potrebbe scoppiare una guerra. Hanagbi ha detto ,
Se Biden appoggia questa politica, alla fine ci sarà uno scontro violento tra Israele e Iran.
A parte quella singola frase del Times di oggi , neppure il Washington Post sembra molto allarmato per ciò che un Trump potrebbe fare all'estero nelle prossime 10 settimane. Il British Independent , un rispettato giornale dell'establishment, ha consultato un certo numero di esperti e ha riferito :
. . . alcuni temono che il vendicativo signor Trump e la cerchia di opportunisti, di agenti di influenza straniera e di ideologi di estrema destra che lo circondano ,utilizzeranno il periodo provvisorio, prima che il signor Biden sia insediato il 20 gennaio, per perseguire ulteriormente i loro programmi e avere un impatto dannoso nel mondo .
E che dire dell'impatto di quelle sanzioni imposte dagli Stati Uniti sul popolo iraniano? La stampa mainstream statunitense non ha riportato molto su questo argomento , ma il viceministro della sanità iraniano ha appena annunciato che il paese ha acquistato 5 milioni di dosi di vaccino antinfluenzale, ma le sanzioni statunitensi impediscono loro di importarle . L'Iran è stato duramente colpito dal COVID-19 e, proprio come in America e altrove, teme un "twindemic" all'inizio della stagione influenzale invernale.
La politica di sanzioni USA / Israele non è solo immorale. È anche colossalmente stupido. L'Iran e i suoi 82 milioni di persone non si arrenderanno o scompariranno. Molti iraniani, molto probabilmente la maggioranza, non amano il loro governo teocratico, ma non guarderanno i loro familiari e vicini morire senza alla fine reagire in qualche modo e da qualche parte. La campagna di guerra economica Trump / Netanyahu fomenta un conflitto per i decenni a venire .
The single chilling sentence is right there in the 8th paragraph of today’s New York Times story about how Donald Trump just fired his Defense Secretary, Mark Esper:
. . . Defense Department officials have privately expressed worries that the president might initiate operations, whether overt or secret, against Iran or other adversaries in his waning days in office.
That expression — “initiate operations” — is a perfect example of Orwellian vagueness; what the paper actually means is that “Commander-in-Chief Trump might order American troops to fire weapons at Iran, and kill Iranian human beings.”
But after that one sentence, the Times completely drops the subject, and rattles on about the personnel changes at the Pentagon that will follow Trump’s firing of Esper, sounding like a sportswriter covering a trade between two baseball teams. Don’t Times readers, especially in America, have the right to more reporting about how their unhinged president may start killing people in their name?
You have to turn to Axios, a newer online publication, to learn more. Barak Ravid, from Israel, reports that Trump’s special envoy on Iran, Elliott Abrams, is in the Mideast, “pushing a plan to slap a long string of new sanctions on Teheran in the 10 weeks left until Joe Biden’s inauguration.” Israeli sources told Ravid that this “flood” of sanctions
will increase pressure on the Iranians and make it harder for the Biden administration to revive the 2015 nuclear deal. . .
New York Times reporter David Halbfinger is also in Israel, but he somehow missed the Elliott Abrams visit. He has a report today that appeared after the Axios dispatch, but he apparently didn’t get around to asking his sources about the increased pressure on Iran. He, and the Times generally, continue to miss (or conceal) a central element of the story: Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has tried to goad the U.S. into a conflict with Iran for more than a decade.
Halbfinger also failed to report an ominous statement by Tzachi Hanegbi, a government minister who belongs to Netanyahu’s Likud party, who said that if Biden revives the Iran nuclear deal a war could break out. Hanagbi said,
If Biden stays with that policy, there will, in the end, be a violent confrontation between Israel and Iran.
Aside from that single sentence in today’s Times, neither it nor the Washington Post seem much alarmed at what an angry Trump might do overseas in the next 10 weeks. By contrast, the British Independent, also a respected establishment newspaper, consulted a number of experts, and reported that
. . . some fear the famously vindictive Mr. Trump and the coterie of opportunists, foreign-influenced operatives, and hard-right ideologues surrounding him will use the interim period before Mr. Biden is sworn into office on January 20 to further pursue their agendas and harmfully impact the world based on suggestions or advice from his entourage.
And what about the impact of those U.S.-imposed sanctions on the Iranian people? The mainstream U.S. press hasn’t reported on that much lately, but Iran’s deputy health minister just announced that the country bought 5 million doses of flu vaccine — but U.S. sanctions are stopping them from being imported. Iran has been hit hard by COVID-19, and, just like in America and elsewhere, fears a “twindemic” as the winter flu season starts.
The U.S./Israel sanctions policy is not just immoral. It is also colossally stupid. Iran and its 82 million people are not going to surrender, or disappear. Plenty of Iranians, quite probably a majority, dislike their theocratic government, but they are not going to watch their family members and neighbors die unnecessarily without eventually fighting back — somehow, somewhere. The Trump/Netanyahu campaign of economic warfare is fomenting conflict for decades to come.
