The Jerusalem District court yesterday found a settler from Yitzhar guilty of inciting violence and insulting a public official. The quotation above is a message posted in the settlement's online group chat by one of its 200 members.
Yitzhar is known to be one of the most violent settlements in the West Bank - violence that is aimed mostly at the neighboring Palestinian villages, but Israeli police and IDF soldiers aren't always spared from it. Every now and then, usually when a soldier is attacked, the Israeli general public is reminded of the existence of Yitzhar and its settlers when an incident surfaces in the media, at which point we hear a flurry of condemnations from the likes of the Defense Minister (and sometimes even from the settlers themselves) who exclaim that this time "a red line has been crossed" and that the perpetrators will be arrested. And then the news cycle moves on and everyone forgets all about it. Until the next time.
Remember, for example, that time when settlers from the outpost next to Yitzhar threw Molotov cocktails at Border Patrol police (we wrote about it here: https://bit.ly/31CzrZ3)? The then-Defense Minister called the incident "an escalation". Or the time when COVID-infected settlers escaped from quarantine, stole equipment from the IDF and reportedly attacked Palestinians in the area they were taken to (we wrote about it here: https://bit.ly/3gj4ahZ)? "The security forces will bring those involved to justice," said a military source after the incident. So many unkept promises have been made since then, that we've simply stopped counting.
All of the above incidents took place in the last few months alone. But this story isn't new: "They (settlers from Yitzhar) took a boulder, threw it, just threw a boulder at one of the soldiers," told us one former IDF soldier about an incident he witnessed in 2010. Another soldier told us about a military post inside Yitzhar: "the settlers just destroyed all the rest . Everything. The entire post. Just destroyed it entirely." Supporters of the occupation claim that IDF soldiers are sent to the occupied territories to protect Israel, but it's clear that the main thing they're sent to protect is a deluded messianic vision of a 'Greater Israel' and its violent proponents. And when our soldiers don't dance exactly to the settlers' tune, the settlers have no problem physically attacking the very people who were sent to protect them. The politicians can say all they want about "red lines" being crossed and "standing up for our soldiers", but in reality they don't give soldiers the most basic tools to deal with the problem. Soldiers aren't allowed to touch settlers, much less to arrest them. But on the very rare occasion that a soldier goes out of his way to protect a Palestinian under attack, as happened recently in Hebron, the IDF calls the settlers' violence "an anomoly".

I sostenitori dell'occupazione sostengono che i soldati dell'IDF vengono inviati nei territori occupati per proteggere Israele, ma è chiaro che vengono inviati per proteggere la visione messianica di una Grande Israele ′′ e i suoi violenti sostenitori.
