Christians United for Israel’s annual conference, usually held in Washington, will be a “virtual summit” this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The organization, which represents millions of Israeli evangelical supporters, released a video on Saturday promoting its virtual gathering scheduled for late June. The oldest official in the Trump administration who is currently speaking at the summit is David Friedman, Trump’s ambassador to Israel. Other senior officials are also expected to speak.
Last year’s event, which took place in Washington, included appearances by Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and John Bolton, who was National Security Advisor at the time.
Christians United for Israel describes itself as a non-partisan organization and the largest pro-Israeli group in America. Its founder, Texas Pastor John Hagee, made a speech at the 2018 ceremony in which Trump celebrated the move of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem. He said: “There has never been a pro-Israeli president than Donald Trump.”
The oldest Israeli official who is currently speaking at the conference is the Ambassador to the United States, Ron Dermer, who has spoken regularly at CUFI events over the years. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu previously sent video messages to CUFI gatherings and told a CUFI audience in 2017 that “Israel has no greater friends” than evangelical Christians.
Speakers representing the Trump administration at this year’s event are expected to make some announcements about plans to annex areas in the West Bank. Friedman earlier this month said the government would give Israel the green light to annex all settlements in the West Bank in the near future.
The CUFI summit will be the first major event for a pro-Israeli organization to be turned into a virtual assembly. In early March, AIPAC, the largest lobbying group that supports Israel in the United States, held its annual conference in Washington, which, despite growing fears of the coronavirus crisis, attended some 18,000 attendees from the United States and around the world.
In the days following the conference, participants returning home were tested positive for coronavirus in New York, California, Ohio and Washington DC, as well as in Toronto, Canada. The conference took place before a U.S. state issued an order to stay at home or closed schools.
Evangelical Christians are estimated at around 25 percent of voters in the US presidential election, and around 80 percent of them supported Trump in 2016. His promise to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem and withdraw from the Iranian nuclear deal, along with his promise to appoint conservative US Supreme Court judges, played an important role in gaining evangelical support.
This year’s conference is the last chance for senior officials working for Trump to speak to a large gathering of Israeli evangelicals before the November elections. Pollsters and political analysts believe that from 2016 Trump will need to maintain his high level of evangelical support to ensure re-election and that a decline in support for him in this group could be dangerous to his prospects.
A poll published two weeks ago by the Pew Research Center found that white evangelical Christians give Trump a better grade than any other religious and demographic group in America in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. In the survey, 75 percent of respondents who identified themselves as white evangelical Christians said that Trump coped with the crisis in an excellent or good manner. For comparison: only 33 percent of the Jews said the same thing.
However, even this poll contained worrying information for the president: an earlier poll conducted by the same institution in March found 81 percent of white evangelicals had a positive opinion of how he dealt with the crisis. In other words, the number decreased slightly between March and May.
