Gideon Levy : Gantz, l'erede perfetto di Rabin

La costante preoccupazione per la natura della manifestazione , se si dirà la parola "omicidio", se sarà politica e soprattutto se si canterà Maor Edri, rende tutti ancora più stanchi di questo rituale inutile Non è mai stato chiaro cosa si vuole ottenere, se non consentire ai partecipanti di sfogarsi ed esprimere un anelito desiderio per Rabin senza considerare seriamente ciò che era. La decisione di rendere Gantz il principale oratore quest'anno, è 'la dichiarazione politica attuale .
Gantz potrebbe benissimo essere Rabin numero 2. Un po 'diverso ,ma simile a un fratello in termini di visione del mondo. Le due figure sono considerate con una stima maggiore dei loro meriti : Rabin come profeta della pace e Gantz come speranza di redenzione e purificazione dopo il Primo Ministro Benjamin Netanyahu . Tuttavia, proprio come Rabin non era il profeta della pace , Gantz non darà vita alla tanto attesa redenzione.
I due hanno una narrazione condivisa: la pace non verrà mai stabilita con i palestinesi. I negoziati - sì, accordi parziali sicuramente, ma non la fiducia, non il riconoscimento di essere un popolo con uguali diritti in questa terra, non il riconoscimento che sono esseri umani esattamente uguali agli ebrei israeliani.
Onestamente Rabin e Gantz hanno capito che è impossibile continuare a vivere con la spada per sempre. Avrebbero sicuramente trovato un linguaggio comune tra loro: la necessità di fare qualcosa. Ma questo qualcosa è spaventosamente privo di sostanza per Rabin, esattamente come lo è per il suo erede, Gantz.
Entrambi hanno molto sangue nelle mani. È difficile credere che Rabin fosse tormentato quando stava per stringere la mano di Yasser Arafa, visto che lui stesso era responsabile di molto più spargimento di sangue e sofferenza palestinese.
Anche le mani del suo erede, il capo dello staff dell'IDF durante l'Operazione sul bordo protettivo nella Striscia di Gaza, sono macchiate.
È difficile affrontare situazioni ipotetiche: cosa sarebbe successo se non fosse stato ucciso ?. L'immagine di Rabin sarebbe stata sicuramente meno mitica. Probabilmente non sarebbe stato rieletto e sarebbe stato improbabile che realizzasse progressi oltre Oslo. Gli accordi sono stati fatti su misura per Rabin: un piccolo passo avanti e basta.
Non è un caso che Oslo non abbia toccato il fuoco fatale più fatale: gli insediamenti , come se fosse il problema più marginale. Non è un caso che Rabin non abbia espulso i coloni indisciplinati da Hebron immediatamente dopo il massacro di Baruch Goldstein. Allora aveva raggiunto i limiti delle sue capacità e del suo coraggio.
Solo due settimane Haaretz in ebraico ha pubblicato un affascinante pezzo di Yehuda Litani immaginando una conversazione con Rabin su un moderato leader palestinese. "Moderato? Non esiste una cosa del genere ", dice Rabin, irritato." Coesistenza, moderati. Tutto è ridicolo e stai parlando senza senso ... "
Chiunque conoscesse Rabin, cupo e furioso, sa quanto siano autentiche queste parole. E questo ovviamente non vuol dire costruire la pace.
La fiducia di Gantz nei confronti dei palestinesi non è maggiore. Anche lui parla solo di rinnovare i negoziati come obiettivo. E qual è l'obiettivo finale? Non c'è niente . Dove stiamo andando ? stiamo solo giocando con il tempo e cercando di calmare le cose. Non è Netanyahu, ma non è nemmeno la pace.
Questo è esattamente il motivo per cui Gantz è ora la grande speranza del campo di pace. Questo è tutto ciò che vogliamo. Solo un po 'di pace e tranquillità, incontri con Mahmoud Abbas, un altro vertice e accordi più interinali, forse anche qualche altro camion di provviste per Gaza.
Non ci sarà più di così, non ci sarà mai più di così.

The two figures are regarded with greater esteem than they deserve: Rabin as the prophet of peace and Gantz as the hope for redemption and cleansing after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Yet just as Rabin was not the prophet of peace he was made up to be, Gantz will not bring about the long-awaited redemption.The two have a shared narrative: Peace will never be established with the Palestinians. Negotiations – yes, partial agreements – definitely, but not trust, not recognition that they are a people with equal rights in this land, not even recognition that they are equal human beings, exactly like the Israeli Jews.
Decent and honest, Rabin and Gantz understood that it is impossible to continue to live only by the sword forever. They certainly would have found a common language between them: The need to do something. But this something was frighteningly unsubstantial and partial for Rabin, exactly the way it is for his heir, Gantz.
They both have a lot of blood on their hands. It is hard to believe that Rabin was tormented when he was about to shake Yasser Arafat’s hand, at a time when he himself was responsible for a great deal more Palestinian bloodshed and suffering.The hands of his heir, too, the IDF chief of staff during Operation Protective Edge in the Gaza Strip, are stained. Out of the horrors of war, Rabin declared that he had turned to peace. Gantz has done the same. And just as Rabin failed to create it, so will Gantz.
It is hard to deal with hypothetical situations: What would have happened if not for the murder. Rabin’s image would certainly have been less mythic. He would probably not have been reelected, and would have been even less likely to achieve any progress beyond Oslo. The Accords were tailored for Rabin’s measurements: A smallstep forward, and that’s it.
It was no accident that Oslo did not touch the most fateful burning fire, the settlements, as if it was the most marginal of issues. It was not by chance that Rabin did not expel the unruly settlers from Hebron immediately after the Baruch Goldstein massacre. He had reached the limits of his ability and courage then.
Just two weeks ago, Haaretz in Hebrew published a fascinating Yehuda Litani piece imagining a conversation with Rabin about a moderate Palestinian leader. “Moderate? There is no such thing," Rabin says, irritated. "Coexistence, moderates, pro-Jordanians. Everything is ridiculous and you’re talking nonsense … Who you see as moderate, I see on the Kastel with a pouch of bullets on his chest, killing my soldiers in 1948. We heard about them, about these moderates.”Anyone who knew the sullen and raging Rabin knows how authentic these words are. And that of course is not how you build peace.
The trust Gantz has for the Palestinians is no greater. He too speaks only about renewing the negotiations as a goal. And what is the final objective, what is the end game? There is none. Where are we going? We aren’t, we’re only playing for time and trying to calm things down. It’s not Netanyahu, but it’s also not peace.
That’s exactly the reason why Gantz is now the great hope of the peace camp. That’s all we want. Only a little peace and quiet, meetings with Mahmoud Abbas, another summit and more interim agreements, maybe even a few more truckloads of supplies for Gaza.
There will not be any more than that, there was never any more than that.
