There were no reports of casualties or damage in
the alleged attack and a video posted online to social media suggested a
drone was shot down near the airport.
Some
posited that the explosion was the result of an Israeli missile fired
at a weapons depot nearby the airport. According to unverified reports,
Syria's aerial defense responded to Israeli aircraft in the area.
Neither the Syrian government nor Hezbollah issued a statement on the
alleged incident.
On Tuesday, the Israel Defense Forces shot down an Iranian-made drone operated by Hezbollah
after the drone entered the demilitarized zone along the border between
Israel and Syria on the Golan Heights. The Israel Air Force’s aerial
defense command fired a Patriot missile and destroyed the drone.
Two weeks ago, foreign media reports claimed that Israeli warplanes struck a chemical arms plant in Syria
from Lebanese airspace. The Syrian army's general command confirmed in a
statement the attack on what they called a military facility, and said
that two people were killed and extensive damage was caused.
Israel has attacked convoys bringing arms to Hezbollah and
groups on several Israeli fronts dozens of times over the last five
years, a top Israeli military commander has confirmed for the first time
a few weeks ago. The number of Israeli attacks on such convoys since
2012 is approaching triple digits, Maj. Gen. Amir Eshel, the outgoing commander of the Israel Air Force, told Haaretz.
