Una sottocommissione della commissione per gli affari esteri e per la difesa della Knesset ha convocato i membri dell'Associazione Stampa Estera per discutere i loro articoli sul terrorismo e l'occupazione in Israele. Insieme con l'invito i membri FPA hanno ricevuto un questionario relativo alla "copertura di parte" di alcuni mezzi di comunicazione. L' associazione dei giornalisti ,profondamente irritata, ha inizialmente deciso di boicottare l'incontro. Tuttavia alla fine ha accettato . Baker, capo dell'ufficio Reuters ', ha dichiarato: "Abbiamo deciso di venire e ascoltare quello che avevano da dire, anche se il tutto appare come una caccia alle streghe". Nella sua lettera l'organizzazione ha duramente contestato la decisione di convocare i media stranieri per spiegare il modo in cui esse ritraggono il conflitto israeliano -palestinese dichiarando che le conclusioni della discussione erano state già definite precedentmente dalla Knesset : " Le accuse di parzialità dei media, i tentativi di censura- sono azioni di solito associate con i governi autoritari in luoghi come la Russia, la Turchia o l'Arabia Saudita. Tale condotta è sconveniente per un paese come Israele, che ama definirsi come l'unica democrazia in Medio Oriente Non siamo d'accordo con la premessa della discussione in quanto presuppone due cose: che i media stranieri siano polarizzati e che questa presunta tendenza mini la capacità di Israele di annullare gli attacchi terroristici. Non siamo d'accordo che i media stranieri siano di parte e la legittimità della campagna israeliana contro il terrorismo è interamente determinata dal modo in cui Israele conduce quella campagna. Non ha nulla a che fare con i media stranieri. Mentre i media stranieri cercano di agire con professionalità ed equilibrio, il Ministero degli Esteri israeliano in un video su YouTube ha suggerito che i media stranieri sono di parte, ignoranti e stupidi .Il Video per le imprecisioni l'e il palese squilibrio è stato ritirato immediatamente.Ci sono casi in cui i titoli dei media internazionali sono stati mal scelti ,ma sono stati corretti il più rapidamente possibile. Errori isolati sono possibili in tutte le professioni e data la vasta copertura del conflitto sono estremamente isolati e non costituiscono un pregiudizio istituzionale. Va inoltre sottolineato che i titoli non sono mai un storia completa e di solito non sono scritti dai giornalisti , ma piuttosto dai redattori seduti a New York, Londra o altre sedi. "

The surprise was the initiator of this harassment: not the government but the Knesset, and not just the Knesset but the opposition, too.
The subcommittee of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, headed by MK Tzipi Livni (Zionist Union), summoned the foreign media to give an account of their supposedly biased coverage of terror attacks, hostile coverage of Israeli soldiers and policemen, and slander. The reporters grumbled and called the debate a “witch hunt.” Indeed, this Israeli inquisition has no business castigating foreign journalists.
Anyone who ever served as a journalist for an Israeli newspaper or TV channel in Washington cannot imagine a Congressional committee daring to make such a threat against a foreign or local journalist’s freedom of expression.
Israeli democracy dares to intimidate people who report the goings on in the country. Summoning the foreign journalists to the Knesset reflects two troubling tendencies. One is the assailing of those who report on Israel’s gloomy condition. The other is the opposition’s outflanking the government on the right.
There are no grounds to expect that a more desirably worded news report – for example, emphasizing the attack at the beginning of a report and only further down reporting about the assailants who were killed – would improve Israel’s standing in the world. The world has noted that the Palestinians object to the occupation and are expressing their resistance with murderous violence. No emphasis in a report’s headline, or change in a paragraph’s word order, will bring the conflict closer to its end.
