Deputy Defense Minister Eli Ben-Dahan voiced his support of a Canadian Jewish organization's decision to withdraw its support from an event featuring Israeli singer Achinoam Nini - or Noa - over allegations that she supports the BDS movement.
"I'd like to express my unconditional support for the Jewish National Fund of Canada, which in its decision reminds everyone that the Jewish National Fund is a Zionist body. Cooperation with someone who harms Israel with her comments on Independence Day is absurd," the Habayit Hayehudi lawmaker said.
he Canadian Jewish News reported Friday that the Canadaian JNF withdrew its support for an event in Vancouver featuring Nini over the claim that the singer, who also goes by the name Noa, supports the boycott, sanctions and divestment movement against Israel.
Nini's appearance was scheduled at an event sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver to be held this spring to mark Israel Independence Day.
Nini refuted claims that she supports the BDS movement.
"A serious problem has formed here regarding things that have been attributed to me regardless of their truthfulness. I'm being accused as if I've supported the BDS movement, but there were never such things," she said.
"After all, this movement also boycotts my shows as an Israeli. It's ridiculous."
Danny Atar, the chairman of Israel-based Keren Kayemeth made it clear that the decision to withdraw sponsorship of the Vancouver event was taken by JNF Fund (Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael) in Canada alone, adding that he himself is against the Canadian affiliate's withdrawal of funding for it over Nini's views.
Nini said in response that she's "glad of KKL-Israel's response. I'll perform in Vancouver both on Independence Day and Memorial Day, where I will dedicate a song to a fallen family member."
"A small group of people that tries to poison the well wherever I go decided to make a bit of noise. I've received many appeals from the community that clarified that the protest against me doesn’t represent it," she added.
