Erekat: Palestinians Not Expecting U.S. Support in UN Security Council
The United States has not promised the Palestinian Authority that it will withhold its United Nations Security Council
veto should a resolution regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
come up for a vote, senior Palestinian diplomat Saeb Erekat said on
Thursday.
Despite the recent criticism of Israel aired by President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, and rumors the U.S would stop using its veto power
to block resolutions regarding Israel's borders or those containing a
condemnation of Israeli settlements, the Palestinians have been told in
private meetings that an American veto was not an option, the PA's chief
negotiator explained.
"We
have no expectations of the Obama administration during the time it has
left," Erekat told a conference in honor of the upcoming Christmas
holiday.
Asked
why the PA does not jettison the two state solution, Erekat said:
"Those who propose a one-state solution have not internalized the fact
that Israel will never agree to such a solution, if based on equally and
democracy."
Regarding
Israeli complaints that the PA has not condemned Palestinian attacks on
Israelis, Erekat said that "it's not the function of the leadership to
condemn, but to provide security for the nation and its citizens – and
that's what Israel under Netanyahu doesn't do.
"It
has destroyed the hope and the possibility to believe in peace among
young Palestinians and it sells illusions and lies to the Israeli
public, according to which there is no partner among the Palestinians.
All that, in order to strengthen the settlement enterprise and destroy
any chance of peace.
Erekat
added: "We are on the verge of a new year in which the Palestinian
leadership will make hard decisions, unless the international community
wakes up and saves the two-state solution.
"The status quo will not continue in 2016," he said.
