Quattro ragazze palestinesi, età 11-14 anni , sono state arrestate ieri dalla polizia di Hebron  perchè sospettate  di aver rubato  ciliegie dall'  albero di un colono. L'arresto è avvenuto mentre le ragazzine  (una delle quali   è sordomuta ) ritornavano dalla scuola  e si recavano nel  loro villaggio, At-Tuwani, sulle colline a sud di Hebron.
In passato, quando abbiamo prodotto la prova che un colono adulto aveva rubato numerosi sacchi di olive da un boschetto appartenente al vicino villaggio di Susya, la polizia ha  svolto le indagini con molta lentezza  Il caso è stato chiuso quando il colono ha portato una bottiglia, comprata al supermercato, di olio d'oliva a titolo di risarcimento.
Le ragazze hanno ricevuto la consulenza legale di un avvocato che lavora per i  Rabbini per i Diritti Umani . Gabi Lasky le rappresenterà in ulteriori procedimenti.  L' attivista per i diritti umani, Ezra Nawi , arrivato  sulla scena rapidamente ci ha  segnalato la vicenda.

2  Poichè gli scolari palestinesi della zona sono stati ripetutamente molestati dai coloni locali, i soldati sono ora tenuti a fornire una scorta a  tutti gli studenti che frequentano la scuola del villaggio di a-Tawani. Quattro ragazzine palestinesi  (di età 11, 13, 14 e 15 anni . Una  di loro è  sordomuta) hanno lasciato la scuola prima  dell'orario previsto pertanto   i soldati non erano ancora arrivati,  Decidono quindi di tornare  a casa per conto proprio  e il  loro percorso passa vicino  a un frutteto di ciliegi nella colonia di Havat Maon.
Quando i soldati finalmente incontrano  le ragazze vicino Havat Maon, i coloni  le  accusano di aver mangiato le ciliegie da un albero e chiedono che  siano arrestate per furto. I soldati ubbidiscono  anche se due delle quattro ragazze non possono essere accusate in ogni caso: una perché  troppo giovane, l'altra a causa del  suo handicap.
Dopo  tre ore arriva  una macchina della polizia e porta  le ragazze alla stazione di polizia di Kiryat Arba. Immediatamente viene rilasciata la ragazzina di  11 anni e quella sordomuta ,mentre le altre due sono interrogate per qualche minuto. Entrambe le ragazze negano  di aver mangiato qualsiasi ciliegia  e la polizia alla fine le lascia andare via .
Zahava Gal-On ,presidente del Partito Meretz ,  ha biasimato l' incidente sulla sua pagina Facebook. "Un colono ha detto a  un soldato che le ragazze avevano mangiato un paio di ciliegie del suo  albero. I soldati non hanno esitato. Hanno chiamato la polizia   e le ragazze sono stati fermate per essere interrogate . Affinché non si abbiano dubbi  i coloni che quotidianamente molestano  queste ragazze , non sono mai stati arrestati. Un paese la cui legislazione permette che quattro ragazze che mangiano le ciliegie da un albero di qualcun altro siano messe agli arresti, è un paese che ha perso la sua coscienza morale ".

1  Four Palestinian girls, ages eleven to fourteen, were arrested yesterday by Hebron police. Initial reports indicate that the girls were arrested on the suspicion that they had picked cherries from a settler’s tree. The arrest occurred as the girls (one of whom has developmental delays) were walking home from school towards their village, At-Tuwani, in the South Hebron Hills.

In the past, when we produced proof that an adult settler had stolen many sacks of olives from a grove belonging to the nearby village of Susya, the police dragged their feet on the case significantly. The case was eventually closed when the settler brought a store-bought bottle of olive oil as compensation.
  The girls received preliminary legal counsel from a lawyer working on behalf of Rabbis for Human Rights. Gabi Lasky will represent them in further proceedings. Human rights activist Ezra Nawi arrived on scene quickly and reported the story.

2  Because Palestinian schoolchildren in the area have been repeatedly harassed by local settlers, soldiers are now supposed to provide an escort in both directions for all students who attend school in the village of a-Tawani, where the girls study. But because the girls (ages 11, 13, 14 and 15. One of them is a deaf-mute) left school early (10am) on Tuesday after finishing an exam, the soldiers had not yet arrived, and they started home on their own.Their route passes by a cherry orchard in the settlement of Havat Maon.
When the soldiers finally met up with the girls near Havat Maon, the settlers claimed the girls had eaten cherries from one of the trees and demanded that they be arrested for theft. The soldiers then detained the girls for questioning, even though two of the four girls could not be charged in any case — one because she is too young and the other because of her impairment.
The soldiers waited at the settlement for about three hours until a police car arrived to take the girls to the police station in Kiryat Arba. There, police immediately released the 11 year old and the deaf-mute, but questioned the other two for a few minutes. Both girls denied eating any cherries, and police eventually released them too.
Police said in response that they were required to question the girls, because they had received a complaint about theft.
Meretz chairwoman Zahava Gal-On lambasted Tuesday’s incident on her Facebook page. “A settler told a soldier that the girls had eaten a few cherries off his tree,” she wrote. “The soldiers didn’t hesitate: They called the police, and the girls were taken in for questioning. Lest you had any doubts, the hilltop youth who harass these girls on a daily basis have never been arrested. A country whose laws enable four girls who ate cherries from someone else’s tree to be put under arrest is a country that has lost its moral conscience.”
