On a sunny day in 1948, Nissan Salzmann took his wife and daughters to the beach in Tel Aviv. While filming his family playing in the waves, he captured a burning ship in the background. Only later did he realize the significance of the scene. His camera had recorded one of the most dramatic moments in Israeli history – the sinking of the Altalena – an event which nearly brought the young state to the brink of civil war. — presso Tel Aviv beach.
