Gerusalemme, destra israeliana a caccia dello scontro

Graffiti “Price tag” (campagna ufficiosa dei coloni contro le demolizioni in alcuni outpost illegali in Cisgiordania) sulle mura di un chiesa battista a Gerusalemme domenica scorsa sono solo l’ultimo atto di una serie di vessazioni contro istituzioni cristiane e musulmane negli ultimi due mesi.
Solo nelle scorse due settimane sono state attaccate la scuola bilingue arabo-ebraica a Sud di Gerusalemme e due chiese. Domenica 19 febbraio, giovani musulmani si sono scontrati con le forze di polizia israeliane a Haram al Sharif (il Monte del Tempio, Spianata delle Moschee, ndr) durante la visita di un gruppo di turisti scortati dalla sicurezza, dopo che un sito web della destra israeliana, Har Habayit Shelanu (“Il Monte del Tempio è nostro”, in ebraico) chiamava gli ebrei a prendersi il sito di Haram al Sharif. Il sito riportava un annuncio dei movimenti Monte del Tempio e Il Tempio che dichiarava domenica 19 febbraio “il giorno del pellegrinaggio di massa per rafforzare la sovranità ebraica sul Monte del Tempio”. Come risposta, nell’ultima preghiera musulmana del venerdì precedente il 19, sono stati mossi appelli a manifestare ad Haram al Sharif la domenica successiva.
Secondo il sopra menzionato sito web, il parlamentare della Knesset Ori Ariel avrebbe partecipato all’evento. Una settimana prima, la polizia aveva impedito a Moshe Feiglin, membro di estrema destra del partito Likud (candidato alle primarie nelle scorse settimane contro Netanyahu, ndr) dal mettere piede ad Haram al Sharif.
Negli scontri verificatisi domenica 19, diciotto palestinesi sono stati arrestati.
Tra gli attivisti di destra israeliani c’è chi giudica quella del sito Har Habayit Shelanuuna provocazione. Tuttavia, anche le organizzazioni considerate moderate chiedono spesso un cambiamento dello status quo ad Haram al Sharif. In un editoriale del 13 febbraio, un organizzazione americana sionista chiedeva al governo israeliano di fermare la discriminazione contro gli ebrei nel Monte del Tempio e di garantire loro il diritto a pregare nel sito.
Secondo l’organizzazione, “il Monte del Tempio, e non il Muro del Pianto, è il più importante luogo sacro per gli ebrei”. L’associazione ha aggiunto che “un ebreo che comprende il significato di Gerusalemme e del Monte del Tempio non può restare in silenzio e permettere ai musulmani di impossessarsi di quello che appartiene per legge agli ebrei”.
Inoltre, il Women’s Forum for the Temple, guidato da Einat Ziv e Rivka Shimon, organizza un pellegrinaggio di donne due volte al mese a Haram al Sharif. In risposta a tale iniziativa, i leader religiosi musulmani hanno chiesto alle donne musulmane di entrare nel sito e proteggerlo.
Il ministro degli Esteri giordano, Nasser Judeh, ha parlato degli scontri di domenica affermando che le azioni degli estremisti israeliani e dei parlamentari della Knesset sono pericolose provocazioni che feriscono i sentimenti di tutti i musulmani. Sheikh Yusuf al Qaradawi, capo dell’Unione Internazionale degli Studenti Musulmani, ha denunciato i tentativi israeliani di alterare lo status quo locale e ha chiamato i musulmani a organizzarsi per difendere il luogo sacro. In un editoriale pubblicato lunedì, Sheikh sottolinea che Haram al Sharif è la linea rossa e che i musulmani non possono restare fermi e calmi se viene attaccato.

Nadler, Engel and Hoenlein inspect Jewish gravestones allegedly desecrated by Muslims on Mt of Olives (Jewish Press)
Not to be outdone by Ariel Sharon, who provoked an entire Intifada by forcing his way onto the Temple Mount, nor by Moshe Feiglin, who provoked wholesale Muslim riots in the past two weeks with provocative flyers calling for destruction of the Muslim sacred mosques there, Congressmembers Jerrod Nadler and Elliot Engel, and Conference of Presidents head Malcolm Hoenlein toured the Mount of Olives (here’s the news story). They did so under the direction of the Kahanist NY Jewish Press managing editor, Yishay Fleisher, who lives as a settler in the disputed East Jerusalem neighborhood.
Wonder of wonders, the settler supporters were shocked, I say SHOCKED that Muslim worshippers at a nearby East Jerusalem mosque met them with a hail of rocks. Naturally, Israeli police drew their weapons. Why not escalate the tensions with a few maimed or killed Muslims? Or think of the alternative, we could’ve had a few knucklehead members of Congress with concussions and started an international incident that could’ve made the political climate even worse than it already is. In order to show which side his settler bread is buttered on, Hoenlein has announced his plan to retake Har Ha-Zeytim (Mount of Olives) for the Jewish people. Hey, if we’re going to have a holy war, why not have one over a cemetery and a bunch of gravestones?
The Jewish Press’ Kahanist editor announced his plan to complete the Judaization of the Mount of Olives in the same way Elad and other settlers groups are de-Arabizing Silwan and Sheikh Jarrah:
“One day soon, Maale HaZeitim will be a quiet, gentrified, normal Jerusalem neighborhood.”
The only thing he neglected to say was that to be “quiet, gentrified and normal” it would have to be, God willing, Arab-rein.
Engel and Nadler have now earned pro-settler combat pay, which will come in handy in their next elections when they face their Chabad, Haredi and ultra-Israel Brooklyn supporters who expect nothing less. You can be sure when Feiglin and Ateret Cohanim hold their first photo-op at the newly rebuilt Holy Temple, built on the ruins of the Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa Mosque, that Nadler, Engel and Hoenlein will be there to have their pictures taken. With any luck, perhaps there can be a few bodies of the Muslim worshippers they had to kill in order to attain this august achievement. That would put the victory in the proper context of a Jewish Jihad-holy war.
Let it not be said that Israelis and Palestinians are fighting this war solely amongst themselves. For right-wing American Jews are doing their best to fan the flames as well. A schandeh.
