Combatants for Peace

Elmetto con il teschio e arresto

Avner Wishnitzer attivista e fondatore di Combatants for Peace, scrive:

Eravamo in sei.

Avner Wishnitzer, Combatants for Peace activist and founder, writes:

Does this helmet reflect Israel to you? This is an Israeli army helmet carrying the Israeli flag. And a skull. The Israeli flag and a skull. We photographed the helmet yesterday, when we were detained at the Kiryat Arba police station (in the Hebron district, in the Occupied Palestinian Territories). There were six of us. We all wore Israeli Army helmets in the past, and all of us – Combatants for Peace activists joined by others – were arrested when we tried to bring a water tank to one of the Palestinian families living near At-Tawani in the south Hebron hills.
Why did we try to bring them water? Because the Palestinians living in Area C (the largest section of the Occupied Territories, is under total civil and military control of Israel) suffer grave discrimination in their access to water: While they can only receive water in water-tanks, and only on certain days of the week and at an astronomical cost, nearby Jewish-Israeli settlements are connected to the Israeli water grid like you and me. Israel claims that these families don’t receive water because they live in illegal homes, but the nearby Avigail Settlement – which is illegal even according to Israeli laws – enjoys endless water through pipes.
Two peoples live between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean sea; One controls the other, and prevents it the basic democratic right of self-determination; One is systematically expropriating land from the other, to settle its own sons and daughters on; One is dispossessing the population of the occupied other through the prevention of access to water, robbing of resources, roadblocks, walls, fences, and a bureaucratic permit system. Systematic, institutionalized, and organized violence protects the anti-democratic order and crushes any resistance.
The soldiers that prevented us from providing water yesterday were simply those whose turn it was to serve this order. Many of them fashioned helmets with the skull symbol. Others had it sowed to their vests. The symbol can be removed from the helmets and vests, but that would be helpful only to hide the shame. This oppressive order which created these symbols to begin with, must be deconstructed, and that is the task we all face, all those who hold the values of democracy dear

Live Update: Now is south-Hebron: Tens of activists from Combatants for Peace and other organizations are trying to bring the most basic thing in life - water - to the Hamamade community, which Israel insists on drying up. The activists are demanding from the government of Israel: Stop the dry-out, show some humanity, and take responsibility as is required by International law.
The Israeli army is shooting teargas trying to stop the activists....
