Il 24 agosto 1929 nasceva Yasser Arafat, presidente dell'Organizzazione per la liberazione della Palestina (Olp) dal 1969 fino alla sua morte nel 2004 . Ha sempre sostenuto di essere nato a Gerusalemme , ma secondo i biografi che hanno verificato le sue origini sarebbe nato al Cairo o nella Striscia di Gaza, da una famiglia benestante di mercanti.  Il suo nome di battesimo era Muhammad, ma si è sempre fatto chiamare con il soprannome di Yasser.  Sin dall'adolescenza, Arafat si avvicinò a gruppi di combattenti palestinesi che cercavano di resistere contro l'occupazione israeliana.
