Police from the Judea and Samaria District questioned Sunday four men on suspicion that they received classified information from a soldier currently under arrest for allegedly leaking information regarding police raids in a radical settlement.
The soldier, Ya’akov Sela, 25, has been under arrest for more than a month. He is a noncommissioned officer in an intelligence unit of the Israel Defense Forces’ Etzion Brigade. He is suspected of a number of instances of leaking information to friends in the radical Bat Ayin settlement, where he lives, about the police’s plans to arrest him and right-wing activists. Sela apparently gained access to the information because all police activity in the region goes through the Etzion Brigade, at one of whose bases he was stationed.
The four men were taken in for questioning by the police, after officers raided their homes early Sunday morning. Three are neighbors of Sela’s in Bat Ayin, in the West Bank. The other man is a resident of Jerusalem. Two of the men have been questioned before on suspicion of receiving information from Sela. One is said to be a journalist for the Kol Hayehudi (Jewish Voice) website, who is suspected of receiving text messages from Sela.
Investigators are examining whether Sela did more than just inform his friends about planned police operations – such as leaking official documents, including operational police plans in the Judea and Samaria region, along with information relating to Arab residents. Haaretz has learned that one of the questioned men has confirmed that he received information from Sela.
Sela is also suspected of leaking information about operations by the Judea and Samaria District police, as well as the movement of forces and the activities of the police unit in charge of far-right political crimes.
The police intend to recommend indictments against the men who received the information from Sela.
Sela is expected to be indicted today by the Military Advocate General, at the military court in Jaffa. Sela was arrested on March 11 by the Shin Bet security service.
